How the Tiburón Community Got its Name
It houses one of Southwest Florida’s best known golf clubs, but as it turns out, the Tiburón community’s name, itself, has strong ties to one of the biggest names in golf. Tiburón is the Spanish word for shark, and golf great, Greg Norman, went by the nickname, the “Great White Shark” during the PGA Tour.
Norman, of course, is also the designer behind the two golf courses at Tiburón Golf Club, which further explains the namesake. The Gold Course at Tiburón once hosted an annual event called the “Shark Shootout”, featuring members of the PGA Tour Champions and PGA Tour.
These days, that course is host to the Grant Thornton Invitational. The Gold Course originally opened in the late 1990s. The other course at Tiburón is the Black Course. This course annually hosts the Chubb Classic. The Black Course opened a few years after the Gold Course, in the early 2000s.
There’s even a Tiburón Golf Academy on the property, which offers up junior golf programming. In addition, the North Naples golf club and community is home to a Golf Shop, fitness and personal trainers, as well as massage therapy and physical therapy services.
A designated, Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Tiburón also features a large clubhouse with dining rooms and lounge areas. Tiburón surrounds The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort. The golf club and gated golf community go by the same Tiburon name. The residential section of Tiburón features your choice of condos, villas, single-family homes, or estates.
Some of the largest homes in Tiburón are priced in the multi-million-dollar range and may contain well upwards of 4,000 square feet of living space. A recently listed estate in Tiburón was constructed in the early 2000s, complete with five-bedrooms and 4.5-baths.
A top floor penthouse in Tiburón overlooks the 18th and 9th fairways. It comes with three-bedrooms plus a den, 3.5-baths, and screened-in balconies.
